Elimination of discrimination against women
The Human Rights Council,
Guided by the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations,
Guided also by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International
Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, the International Covenant on Civil and
Political Rights, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against
Women and the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial
Discrimination,
Recalling the Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action adopted on 25 June
1993 by the World Conference on Human Rights,1 the Beijing Declaration and Platform for
Action adopted on 15 September 1995 by the Fourth World Conference on Women,2 and
their 2005 and 2010 reviews, the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action adopted on
8 September 2001 by the World Conference against Racism, Racial Discrimination,
Xenophobia and Related Intolerance3 and the outcome document of the Durban Review
Conference adopted on 24 April 2009,4
Welcoming the establishment of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and
the Empowerment of Women, known as UN Women,
Bearing in mind the challenges still faced by all countries throughout the world to
overcome inequality between men and women,
