Twenty-fifth anniversary of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women The General Assembly, Recalling its resolution 54/134 of 17 December 1999, by which it designated 25 November as the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, Reaffirming the Universal Declaration of Human Rights 1 and other relevant international human rights instruments, including the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, 2 Reaffirming also the Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action 3 as well as the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, 4 the Cairo Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development 5 and the outcomes of their review conferences, Reaffirming further the Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women, adopted on 20 December 1993, 6 and its provisions, including article 1, in which violence against women was defined as any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, __________________ 1 2 3 4 5 6 24-11038 (E) Resolution 217 A (III).
