Assistance to refugees, returnees and displaced persons in Africa The General Assembly, Recalling the Organization of African Unity Convention governing the specific aspects of refugee problems in Africa of 1969 1 and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, 2 Reaffirming that the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees, 3 together with the 1967 Protocol thereto, 4 as complemented by the Organization of African Unity Convention of 1969, remains the foundation of the international refugee protection regime in Africa, Welcoming the entry into force on 6 December 2012 and the ongoing process of ratification of the African Union Convention for the Protection and Assistance of Internally Displaced Persons in Africa, which mark a significant step towards strengthening the national and regional normative fra meworks for the protection of and assistance to internally displaced persons, Welcoming also the decision of the African Union to declare 2019 as the African Year of Refugees, Returnees and Internally Displaced Persons: Towards Durable Solutions to Forced Displacement in Africa, in commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of the Organization of African Unity Convention governing the specific aspects of refugee problems in Africa of 1969 and the tenth anniversary of the African Union Convention for the Protection and Assistance of Internally Displaced Persons in Africa (Kampala Convention) of 2009, Recognizing the particular vulnerability of women and children, as well as older persons and persons with disabilities, among refugees and displaced persons, including exposure to discrimination, sexual exploitation and abuse, physical abuse, __________________ 1 2 3 4 18-22203 (E) United Nations, Treaty Series, vol. 1001, No. 14691.
