At its 1st to 4th meetings, on 4 and 5 March, the Commission held a general
discussion on agenda item 3.

At the 1st meeting, on 4 March, introductory statements were made by the
Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Gender Issues and Advancement of
Women, the Director of the Division for the Advancement of Women, the Deputy
Executive Director of the United Nations Development Fund for Women and the
Chairperson of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women.

At the same meeting, statements were made by the representatives of Peru, the
Republic of Korea and South Africa and by the observers for Venezuela (on behalf of
the States Members of the United Nations that are members of the Group of 77 and
China), Spain (on behalf of the European Union and the associated countries of
Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania,
Slovakia, Slovenia, Cyprus, Malta, Turkey and Iceland), Norway and Sweden.
