A/RES/60/190 Recognizing the important dimension and role of tourism as a positive instrument towards the eradication of poverty and the improvement of the quality of life for all people, its potential to make a contribution to economic and social development, especially of the developing countries, and its emergence as a vital force for the promotion of international understanding, peace and prosperity, 1. Takes note of the note by the Secretary-General transmitting the report by the World Tourism Organization on the implementation of the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism; 13 2. Notes with interest the establishment of the World Committee on Tourism Ethics as adopted by the General Assembly of the World Tourism Organization in 2001; 3. Notes the approval by the World Committee on Tourism Ethics of the Procedures for Consultation and Conciliation for the Settlement of Disputes concerning the Application of the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism; 4. Reiterates the invitation to Member States and other stakeholders to consider introducing, as appropriate, the contents of the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism in their relevant laws, regulations and professional practices, and, in this regard, recognizes with appreciation those Member States that have already done so; 5. Recognizes the need to promote sustainable tourism development, including non-consumptive tourism and ecotourism, taking into account the spirit of the International Year of Ecotourism, 2002, the United Nations Year for Cultural Heritage, 2002, the World Ecotourism Summit, 2002, and the Quebec Declaration on Ecotourism, 14 and the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism as adopted by the World Tourism Organization in 1999, 15 in order to increase the benefits from tourism resources for the population in host communities while maintaining the cultural and environmental integrity of the host communities and enhancing the protection of ecologically sensitive areas and natural heritages and to promote sustainable tourism development and capacity-building in order to contribute to the strengthening of rural and local communities; 6. Invites Member States and other stakeholders to give support to the activities undertaken by the World Tourism Organization in favour of sustainable tourism in developing countries for the eradication of poverty; 7. Emphasizes the need for the promotion of responsible and sustainable tourism for the protection and safeguarding of natural and cultural heritage that could be beneficial to all sectors of society and the natural environment towards the achievement of sustainable development; 8. Requests the Secretary-General to report to the General Assembly at its sixtyfifth session on the developments related to the implementation of the present resolution on the basis of the reports of the World Tourism Organization. 68th plenary meeting 22 December 2005 _______________ 13 A/60/167.
