Welcomes the decision of the Secretary-General of 27 October 1997:5 (a) That the substantive responsibilities for the decolonization programme will be maintained in the Department of Political Affairs of the Secretariat; (b) To establish a stand-alone decolonization unit with the necessary resources to provide substantive input for the work of the Special Committee; (c) That the Department of General Assembly Affairs and Conference Services of the Secretariat will be responsible for the technical secretariat servicing relating to the decolonization programme, as outlined in his letter of 17 March 1997;6 and his commitment to implement subprogramme 1.6 of the medium-term plan for the period 1998-2001;7 16.
