• Promote the responsible use of new information • Encourage and support men's own initiatives to com- technologies, in particular the Internet, including the encouraging of steps to prevent the use of these technologies for discrimination and violence against women, and for trafficking in women for the purposes of sexual exploitation, including the exploitation of prostitution of women and girls; plement efforts of women's organizations to prevent and eliminate violence against women and girls; • Conduct research on, and create policies and pro- grammes to change, the attitudes and behaviour of perpetrators of violence against women within family and society; • Create policies and programmes to encourage • Actively encourage, support and implement behavioural change in perpetrators of violence against women, including rape, and monitor and assess the impact and effect of such programmes; measures aimed at increasing the knowledge and understanding of violence against women, through gender analysis capacity-building and gender-sensitive training for law enforcement officers, police personnel, the judiciary, medical and social workers, and teachers. ■ • Establish legal literacy programmes to make women aware of their rights and the methods of seeking protection under the law; • Recognize that women and girls with disabilities, women migrants and refugee women and girls could be particularly affected by violence, and encourage the development of programmes for their support; • Encourage campaigns aimed at clarifying opportunities, limitations and rights in the event of migration so as to enable women to make informed decisions and to prevent them from becoming victims of trafficking; Source: United Nations document E/1998/27 5
