At its 1st meeting, on 1 March, the Commission heard an introductory statement by the Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs. 3. At the same meeting, the Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Gender Issues and the Advancement of Women made a statement. 4. Also at the same meeting, the Executive Director of the United Nations Development Fund for Women made a statement. Review of mainstreaming in organizations of the United Nations system (agenda item 3 (a)) 5. At its 10th meeting, on 8 March, the Commission held a discussion on agenda item 3 (a) and heard statements by the Deputy Director of the Division for the Advancement of Women and the Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Gender Issues and the Advancement of Women. 6. At the same meeting, the observer for Algeria made a statement, which was responded to by the Deputy Director of the Division for the Advancement of Women. Emerging issues, trends and new approaches to issues affecting the situation of women or equality between women and men (agenda item 3 (b)) 7. At its 1st to 4th and 6th meetings, on 1 to 3 March, the Commission held a discussion on agenda item 3 (b), together with agenda item 4. 8. At the 1st meeting, on 1 March, statements were made by the representatives of Germany (on behalf of the States Members of the United Nations that are members of the European Union and the associated countries of Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia, as well as Iceland and Liechtenstein), Japan, Norway, Côte d’Ivoire and Italy, and by the observers for Guyana (on behalf of the States Members of the United Nations that are members of the Group of 77 and China), Sweden and Namibia. 9. At the same meeting, the observer for the Holy See made a statement. 10. Also at the same meeting, statements were made by the representatives of the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, and the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia. 11. At the same meeting, the observer for the International Organization for Migration made a statement. 12. Also at the same meeting, the observer for the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions, a non-governmental organization in consultative status with the Economic and Social Council, also made a statement. 13. At its 2nd meeting, on 1 March, statements were made by the representatives of Senegal, Saint Lucia (on behalf of the members of the Caribbean Community), the Dominican Republic, Paraguay, Chile, Cuba, Mali and Turkey, and by the observers for Kazakhstan, Canada, Indonesia and Israel. 14. 32 At the same meeting, the observer for Switzerland made a statement.
