Human Rights Council Resolution 9/7. Human rights and indigenous peoples The Human Rights Council, Recalling all relevant resolutions of the Commission on Human Rights, the Economic and Social Council and the General Assembly related to indigenous issues, Recalling also Council resolutions 6/12 of 28 September 2007 and 6/36 of 14 December 2007, Bearing in mind that the General Assembly proclaimed, in its resolution 59/174, the Second International Decade of the World’s Indigenous People, Recalling that the Assembly adopted, in its resolution 61/295 of 13 September 2007, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, 1. Welcomes the report of the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights and fundamental freedoms of indigenous people (A/HRC/9/9); 2. Also welcomes the report of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights on indigenous issues (A/HRC/9/11); 3. Requests the expert mechanism on the rights of indigenous peoples to identify proposals and to suggest them by consensus to the Council, for its consideration in 2009; 4. Also requests the expert mechanism and the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights and fundamental freedoms of indigenous people to assist the Preparatory Committee by undertaking a review and submitting recommendations as contributions to the outcome of the Durban Review Conference; 5. Further requests the expert mechanism to prepare a study on lessons learned and challenges to achieve the implementation of the right of indigenous peoples to education and to conclude it in 2009;
