Eradicating contemporary forms of slavery from supply chains 2015, para. 13
- Paragraph text
- Following egregious violations of health and building safety standards that resulted in fatal accidents, such as the 2013 Rana Plaza factory collapse in Bangladesh leading to death of over 1,100 garment workers, additional attention has been given to increasing State and corporate accountability for violations of human rights, including labour rights, in global value or supply chains. In this context, the recent commitment by leaders of major global economies at the recent Group of Seven (G7) Summit to take action to address human rights in global supply chains is welcome and needs to be followed up by concrete actions.

Extreme poverty and human rights on universal basic income 2017, para. 25
- Paragraph text
- Some authors on the left of the political spectrum have been enthusiastic supporters of basic income. Guy Standing, a labour economist, has popularized the notion of a “precariat”, a very large segment of the population, whose lives are “dominated by insecurity, uncertainty, debt and humiliation. They are becoming denizens rather than citizens, losing cultural, civil, social, political and economic rights built up over generations”. He argues that in an ever more unequal society, the precariat’s relative deprivation is severe. According to Standing, a basic income would allow people to move in and out of the labour market more easily and would “enable citizens to accept low wages and to bargain more strongly”. Standing has also been involved in important pilot projects in India.

Homelessness as a global human rights crisis that demands an urgent global response 2016, para. 72
- Paragraph text
- For this reason, the Special Rapporteur underlines the critical importance of qualitative evidence, including, for example, oral testimony, photographs or videos. A human rights-based measurement of homelessness should focus on prevention and on addressing underlying causes, and qualitative information capturing actual experiences often reveals more about how to prevent or solve it than numbers alone. It is also vital to understand the trajectories into and out of homelessness, with longitudinal analysis of how people become homeless, how long they are homeless and how they escape from it to supplement point-in-time counts.

Integration of a human rights-based approach in measures to discourage the demand that fosters all forms of exploitation of persons, especially women and children, and which leads to human trafficking 2013, para. 48
- Paragraph text
- Consumers and investors play an important role in pressing businesses to take appropriate action. However, they depend on accurate information being provided by others. In this context, journalists and NGOs that investigate supply and product chains have played an important role and organizations representing exploited workers or providing assistance to them are well-placed to provide accurate information.

Manifestations and causes of domestic servitude 2010, para. 95
- Paragraph text
- [In the case of live-in domestic workers, the identity of work place and home is deeply problematic as it makes this group dangerously isolated. In order to limit and regulate live-in domestic work, States should:] Require employers to undergo a mandatory awareness raising training before employing live-in workers. Employers should be obliged to register live-in workers and ensure that they present themselves to periodic private interviews with labour inspectors.

Minorities in situations of humanitarian crises 2016, para. 83
- Paragraph text
- As noted in her report of 2016 to the Human Rights Council, the Special Rapporteur observed that an analysis of emergency responses to natural disasters in South Asia, including in India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Nepal, has demonstrated that Dalits, for example, have suffered from acute discrimination throughout all the phases of disaster response, from rescue to rehabilitation (see A/HRC/31/56, para 93).

Penalization of people living in poverty 2011, para. 40
- Paragraph text
- While States can adopt reasonable regulations, law enforcement officials are often given wide discretion to determine zones, days and times when street vending activities are banned or restricted. This makes street vendors more vulnerable to abuse by law enforcement officials, private individuals or gangs. As a result, they often suffer from threats to their life and physical integrity, as well as from bribery, extortion and unlawful seizures of their wares.

Post conflict and post disaster reconstruction and the right to adequate housing 2011, para. 43
- Paragraph text
- The Gujarat study points to some of the dangers of resorting to rushed, donor-driven programming, which can neglect the social capital of the affected residents, and to contractor-driven reconstruction projects, which are rarely developmental in nature. The authors conclude that "The drive to rebuild quickly inevitably leads early on to the decision to hire commercial contractors. At this point projects such as these usually cease to be developmental initiatives and become construction projects. The participation of residents is relegated to mixing concrete or making building blocks, or worse. […] Fundamentally, the contractor-driven approach to shelter is focused on the construction of housing units. Yet shelter is far more than that ". They also warn that: "When powerful external agents are driving the process within an affected village, the social capital present within long-standing communities can be ignored or even damaged".

Paragraphe
Preliminary survey on the root causes of attacks and discrimination against persons with albinism 2016, para. 37
- Paragraph text
- In the 26 countries where attacks against persons with albinism have been reported to date, all of which are in sub-Saharan Africa, belief in witchcraft and witchcraft practices have been reported, including by civil society and the media. The beliefs do not seem constrained by socioeconomic class, level of education or location; both urban and rural areas are affected. Witchcraft beliefs and practices are referred to in everyday conversation, and they seem to be socially accepted means of handling issues, providing explanations for unusual occurrences or establishing responsibility in cases of misfortune. Witchcraft beliefs and practices are also used to justify accusations stemming from envy, hatred, vengeance and other similar vice. Belief in witchcraft allows people to make sense of their seemingly arbitrary misfortune and to blame a particular person. This blame is often targeted at persons in one's immediate social circle, after consultation with a witchdoctor.

Witchcraft and the human rights of persons with albinism 2017, para. 18
- Paragraph text
- The United Nations Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions, in a 2009 report (A/HRC/11/2), stated that witchcraft "has not featured prominently on the radar screen of human rights monitors" and that "this may be due partly to the difficulty of defining 'witches' and 'witchcraft' across cultures - terms that, quite apart from their connotations in popular culture, may include an array of traditional or faith healing practices that are not easily defined".
