regions and contributed to progress in the socio-economic conditions of their
people,
Concerned that the continuation of disputes among States, particularly in the
absence of an effective mechanism to resolve them through peaceful means, may
contribute to the arms race and endanger the maintenance of international peace and
security and the efforts of the international community to promote arms control and
disarmament,
Calls upon Member States to refrain from the use or threat of use of

force, in accordance with the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United
Nations;
Reaffirms its commitment to the peaceful settlement of disputes under

Chapter VI of the Charter, in particular Article 33, which provides for a solution by
negotiation, enquiry, mediation, conciliation, arbitration, judicial settlement, resort
to regional agencies or arrangements or other peaceful means chosen by the parties;
Reaffirms the ways and means regarding confidence- and security3.
building measures set out in the report of the Disarmament Commission on its 1993
session; 1

Calls upon Member States to pursue those ways and means through
sustained consultations and dialogue, while at the same time avoiding actions which
may hinder or impair such a dialogue;
Urges States to comply strictly with all bilateral, regional and

international agreements, including arms control and disarmament agreements, to
which they are party;
Emphasizes that the objective of confidence-building measures should be

to help strengthen international peace and security and be consistent with the
principle of undiminished security at the lowest level of armament;
Encourages the promotion of bilateral and regional confidence-building
7.
measures, with the consent and participation of the parties concerned, to avoid
conflict and prevent the unintended and accidental outbreak of hostilities;
Requests the Secretary-General to submit a report to the General
8.
Assembly at its sixtieth session containing the views of Member States on
confidence-building measures in the regional and subregional context;
Decides to include in the provisional agenda of its sixtieth session the
9.
item entitled “Confidence-building measures in the regional and subregional
context”.
