Notes with satisfaction the progress in the work of the Commission, 20 that it is giving current consideration to a number of submissions that have been made regarding the establishment of the outer limits of the continental shelf beyond 200 nautical miles and that a number of States have advised of their intention to make submissions in the near future; 19F 41. Notes that the anticipated heavy workload of the Commission, owing to an increasing number of submissions, places additional demands on its members and the Division, and in that regard emphasizes the need to ensure that the Commission can perform its functions efficiently and effectively and maintain its high level of quality and expertise; 42. Takes note of the decision of the Commission to maintain, to the extent possible given the term of office of the members of the Commission, continuity in the composition of subcommissions throughout the consideration of a submission; 21 20F 43. Also takes note of the decision of the seventeenth Meeting of States Parties to the Convention to continue to address, as a matter of priority, issues related to the workload of the Commission, including funding for its members attending the sessions of the Commission and the meetings of the subcommissions; 22 21F 44. Calls upon States whose experts are serving on the Commission to do their utmost to ensure the full participation of those experts in the work of the Commission, including the meetings of subcommissions, in accordance with the Convention; 45. Takes note with concern of the information provided by the Division regarding the inadequacies in the current level of staffing as well as the hardware and software available to it which are required to support the Commission in the fulfilment of its functions, as reflected in paragraph 69 of the report of the seventeenth Meeting of States Parties to the Convention; 23 2F 46. Endorses, in this regard, the request by the Meeting of States Parties to the Convention to the Secretary-General to take timely measures, before the twentyfirst session of the Commission, to strengthen the capacity of the Division, serving as the secretariat of the Commission, within overall existing resource levels, in order to ensure enhanced support and assistance to the Commission and its subcommissions, in their consideration of submissions, 24 as required by paragraph 9 of annex III to the rules of procedure of the Commission; 25 23F 24F _______________ 18 SPLOS/72.
