Public administration and development The General Assembly, Recalling its resolution 50/225 of 19 April 1996, adopted at the resumed fiftieth session on the question of public administration and development, Recognizing that efficient, effective and transparent public administration, at both the national and international levels, has a pivotal role to play in the implementation of the key objectives of the United Nations Millennium Declaration, 1 1. Welcomes the establishment of the United Nations Public Administration Online Network as a powerful tool made available to Member States for the exchange of information and experience in public administration; 2. Recommends that the Network be expanded to strengthen the capacity of national ministries and institutions of public administration, to access information, experience and practice in public administration, and to receive online training; 3. Requests the Secretary-General to continue to assist Member States, in particular developing countries and countries with economies in transition, upon their request, in their process of reform, by fostering information-sharing, as appropriate, and the exchange of experience; assisting in building essential capacity and essential skills; providing assistance in institution-building; and improving the coordination of development assistance in this field; 4. Also requests the Secretary-General to study the possibility of periodically bringing together high-level policy makers responsible for public administration reform, under the auspices of the United Nations, to discuss issues of common interest and share valuable experience and practice, and to report to the General Assembly at its fifty-seventh session on the results of that study; 5. Further requests the Secretary-General to keep under constant review the developments in this field in Member States and to highlight changes and trends as well as successes in this area, with particular emphasis on the role of public administration in the implementation of the United Nations Millennium _______________ 1 01 49370 See resolution 55/2.
