The Commission on the Status of Women recommends to the Economic and Social Council the adoption of the following draft resolutions: Draft resolution I Situation of women and girls in Afghanistan* The Economic and Social Council, Guided by the Charter of the United Nations, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights,1 the International Covenants on Human Rights,2 the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment,3 the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women,4 the Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women,5 the Convention on the Rights of the Child6 and the Optional Protocols thereto on the involvement of children in armed conflict7 and on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography,8 the Beijing Declaration9 and Platform for Action,10 the further actions and initiatives to implement the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, adopted by the General Assembly at its twenty-third special session,11 accepted humanitarian rules as set out in the Geneva Conventions of 12 August 1949,12 and other instruments of human rights and international law, Recalling that Afghanistan is a party to the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide,13 the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights,2 the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights,2 the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment,14 the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women,15 the Convention on the Rights of the Child16 and __________________ * For the discussion, see chap.
