66/170. International Day of the Girl Child
The General Assembly,
Recalling its resolution 64/145 of 18 December 2009 and all other relevant
resolutions, including the agreed conclusions of the Commission on the Status of
Women, in particular those relevant to the girl child,
Recalling also all human
the child, in particular the girl
Child, 1 the Convention on the
Women, 2 the Convention on
Optional Protocols thereto, 4
rights and other instruments relevant to the rights of
child, including the Convention on the Rights of the
Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against
the Rights of Persons with Disabilities 3 and the
Recognizing that empowerment of and investment in girls, which are critical
for economic growth, the achievement of all Millennium Development Goals,
including the eradication of poverty and extreme poverty, as well as the meaningful
participation of girls in decisions that affect them, are key in breaking the cycle of
discrimination and violence and in promoting and protecting the full and effective
enjoyment of their human rights, and recognizing also that empowering girls
requires their active participation in decision-making processes and the active
support and engagement of their parents, legal guardians, families and care
providers, as well as boys and men and the wider community,
Decides to designate 11 October as the International Day of the Girl
1.
Child, to be observed every year beginning in 2012;
2.
Invites all Member States, relevant organizations of the United Nations
system and other international organizations, as well as civil society, to observe the
International Day of the Girl Child, and to raise awareness of the situation of girls
around the world;
