Strengthening emergency relief, rehabilitation, reconstruction and prevention in the wake of devastating floods in Pakistan The General Assembly, Recalling its resolution 46/182 of 19 December 1991 and other relevant General Assembly and Economic and Social Council resolutions, Cognizant of the substantial loss of life as well as enormous socio-economic, infrastructure and environmental damage caused by the recent devastating floods in Pakistan, Noting that the massive scale of destruction and loss of life caused by unprecedented floods, triggered by torrential rains, in an otherwise arid region reflects the adverse impact of climate change and the growing vulnerability of countries to climate change, Recognizing the urgency of undertaking a massive rescue and relief operation, and supporting the efforts for rehabilitation and reconstruction, Welcoming the assistance and contributions of the international community, including Governments, international organizations, civil society and the private sector, in the relief and rehabilitation efforts, which reflect the spirit of international solidarity and cooperation, to address and meet the challenges of the disaster, and in this context also appreciating the role of the people and Government of Pakistan, Welcoming also the launch by the United Nations on 11 August 2010 of the Pakistan Initial Floods Emergency Response Plan and the continuous engagement of the Secretary-General in the intensification of global relief efforts to meet the urgent and immediate needs of the affected people, Expresses full solidarity and sympathy with the people of Pakistan 1. affected by the floods; 2. Urges the international community, in particular donor countries, international financial institutions and relevant international organizations, as well as the private sector and civil society, to extend full support and assistance to the Government of Pakistan in its efforts to mitigate the adverse impacts of the floods and to meet the medium- and long-term rehabilitation and reconstruction needs; 09-47947 *0947947* Please rec cle ♲
