International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-Violence for the Children of the World (2001–2010) The General Assembly, Recalling its resolution 52/15 of 20 November 1997 and Economic and Social Council resolution 1997/47 of 22 July 1997 proclaiming the year 2000 as the International Year for the Culture of Peace,1 as well as its resolution 52/13 of 20 November 1997 on a culture of peace, Taking into account Commission on Human Rights resolution 1998/54 of 17 April 1998 entitled "Towards a culture of peace",2 Recalling the relevant resolutions of the General Assembly and the Commission on Human Rights concerning the United Nations Decade for Human Rights Education (1995–2004), Taking into account the project of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization entitled "Towards a culture of peace", Aware that the task of the United Nations to save future generations from the scourge of war requires transformation towards a culture of peace, which consists of values, attitudes and behaviours that reflect and inspire social interaction and sharing based on the principles of freedom, justice and democracy, all human rights, tolerance and solidarity, that reject violence and endeavour to prevent conflicts by tackling 1 Official Records of the Economic and Social Council, 1997, Supplement No. 1 (E/1997/97). 2 Ibid., 1998, Supplement No. 3 (E/1998/23), chap.
