Responding to global threats and challenges The General Assembly, Guided by the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations, Affirming the coordinating and leading role of the United Nations in establishing a cohesive and effective system for responding to global threats and challenges, Recalling the relevant provisions of the United Nations Millennium Declaration 1 which state that, in addition to their separate responsibilities to their individual societies, States have a collective responsibility to manage threats to international peace and security and to uphold the principles of human dignity, equality and equity at the global level, Noting with concern various global threats and challenges, in particular those posed by international terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, transnational organized crime, regional conflicts, poverty, unsustainable development, illicit drug trafficking, money-laundering, infectious diseases, environmental degradation, natural disasters, complex emergency situations and others, Recognizing the importance, in the context of implementing the Millennium Declaration, of a comprehensive approach aimed at addressing global threats and challenges in accordance with the Charter, international law and relevant international instruments, Welcoming the ongoing efforts of the Secretary-General to ensure the coordinated implementation of all the provisions of the Millennium Declaration, 1. Acknowledges the importance of further adapting the United Nations to address the threats and challenges of the twenty-first century and the need to enhance the overall effectiveness and complementarity of the United Nations system in combating international terrorism and transnational organized crime, in promoting peace, security, disarmament, conflict prevention, peacekeeping, development and poverty eradication, in protecting the environment, in providing _______________ 1 02 54778 See resolution 55/2.
