A/RES/72/130 International Day of Living Together in Peace Reaffirming also the United Nations Millennium Declaration 2 and General Assembly resolution 70/1 of 25 September 2015, entitled “Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”, Recalling that one of the purposes of the United Nations as set forth in the Charter is to achieve international cooperation in solving internation al problems of an economic, social, cultural or humanitarian character and in promoting and encouraging respect for human rights and for fundamental freedoms for all without distinction as to race, sex, language or religion, Acknowledging that living together in peace is accepting differences and having the ability to listen to, recognize, respect and appreciate others, as well as living in a peaceful and united way, Recognizing the importance of respect and understanding for religious and cultural diversity throughout the world, of choosing dialogue and negotiation over confrontation and of working together, Acknowledging the active engagement of the United Nations system with faith based and cultural organizations and relevant non-governmental organizations in the promotion of interreligious and intercultural dialogue and in bringing together people of different cultures, religions, faiths or beliefs to discuss common issues and objectives, Recognizing the important role of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization and the work of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations on intercultural dialogue, as well as their activities related to the culture of peace and non-violence, Acknowledging the important role of civil society, including academia and volunteer groups, in fostering interreligious and intercultural dialogue, and encouraging support for practical measures that mobilize civil society, including building capacities, opportunities and frameworks for cooperation, Encouraging the continued and increasing efforts and activities on the part of civil society organizations throughout the world in advancing a culture of peace, as envisaged in the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace, 1. Declares 16 May the International Day of Living Together in Peace; 2. Underlines that the International Day of Living Together in Peace constitutes a means of regularly mobilizing the efforts of the international community to promote peace, tolerance, inclusion, understanding and solidarity, and to express its attachment to the desire to live and act together, united in differences and diversity, in order to build a sustainable world of peace, solidarity and harmony; 3. Invites all Member States, organizations of the United Nations system and other international and regional organizations, as well as civil society, including non-governmental organizations and individuals, to observe the International Day of Living Together in Peace in accordance with the culture and other appropriate circumstances or customs of their local, national and regional communities, including through education and public awareness-raising activities; 4. Invites all Member States to further promote reconciliation to help to ensure peace and sustainable development, including by working with communities, faith leaders and other relevant actors, through reconciliatory measures and acts of service and by encouraging forgiveness and compassion among individuals; __________________ 2 2/3 Resolution 55/2. 17-22297
