65/238. Scope, modalities, format and organization of the High-level
Meeting of the General Assembly on the Prevention and
Control of Non-communicable Diseases
The General Assembly,
Recalling its resolution 64/265 of 13 May 2010, in which it decided to
convene a high-level meeting of the General Assembly in September 2011, with the
participation of Heads of State and Government, on the prevention and control of
non-communicable diseases,
Recalling also the outcome document of the High-level Plenary Meeting of the
General Assembly on the Millennium Development Goals, 1 and the commitment
contained therein to undertake concerted action and a coordinated response at the
national, regional and global levels in order to adequately address the
developmental and other challenges posed by non-communicable diseases, namely
cardiovascular diseases, cancers, chronic respiratory diseases and diabetes, and to
work towards a successful high-level meeting of the General Assembly in 2011,
Recognizing the primary role and responsibility of Governments in responding
to the challenge of non-communicable diseases and the essential need for the efforts
and engagement of all sectors of society to generate an effective response,
Recognizing also the important role of the international community and
international cooperation in assisting Member States, particularly developing
countries, and in complementing national efforts to generate an effective response to
non-communicable diseases,
Recalling its resolution 65/95 of 9 December 2010 on global health and
foreign policy,

Decides that the High-level Meeting of the General Assembly on the
Prevention and Control of Non-communicable Diseases shall be held on 19 and
20 September 2011 in New York;
