Pathways to, conditions and consequences of incarceration for women 2013, para. 39
Paragraph
Paragraph text
In China, torture and ill-treatment of "politically sensitive" prisoners have been reported, usually involving activists and human rights defenders. Guards at one prison deliberately prevented women inmates from taking baths and changing clothes for months, or using sanitary napkins during their period. In Argentina's federal prisons, it is argued that women who have a history of behavioural problems are often grouped together on purpose, under inadequate supervision, leading to violence among the female inmates.
