56/46.
Cooperation between the United Nations and the InterParliamentary Union
The General Assembly,
Recalling its resolution 55/19 of 8 November 2000, in which it expressed the
wish that the cooperation between the United Nations and the Inter-Parliamentary
Union be strengthened further,
Having considered the report of the Secretary-General, 1 which takes stock of
such cooperation over the last twelve months,
Noting with appreciation the resolutions adopted by the Inter-Parliamentary
Union and its activities during the past year in support of the United Nations,
Recalling with satisfaction the United Nations Millennium Declaration, 2 in
which Member States resolved to strengthen further cooperation between the United
Nations and national parliaments through their world organization, the InterParliamentary Union, in various fields, including peace and security, economic and
social development, international law and human rights and democracy and gender
issues,
Welcoming the report of the Secretary-General of 26 June 2001, 3
Taking into consideration the Cooperation Agreement between the United
Nations and the Inter-Parliamentary Union of 1996, 4 which provides the foundation
for current cooperation between the two organizations,
Recalling the unique inter-State character of the Inter-Parliamentary Union,

Welcomes the ongoing efforts to explore ways in which a new and
strengthened relationship may be established between the General Assembly and its
subsidiary organs on the one hand and the Inter-Parliamentary Union on the other,
and encourages Member States to continue their consultations with a view to
adopting a decision thereon during the fifty-seventh session of the Assembly;
