60/231. Rights of the child
The General Assembly,
Recalling its previous resolutions on the rights of the child, the most recent of
which is resolution 59/261 of 23 December 2004, as well as Commission on Human
Rights resolution 2005/44 of 19 April 2005, 1
Emphasizing that the Convention on the Rights of the Child 2 must constitute
the standard in the promotion and protection of the rights of the child, and bearing
in mind the importance of the Optional Protocols to the Convention, 3 as well as
other human rights instruments,
Reaffirming the Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action, 4 the United
Nations Millennium Declaration, 5 the outcome document of the twenty-seventh
special session of the General Assembly on children, entitled “A world fit for
children”, 6 and the outcome document of the twenty-sixth special session of the
General Assembly on HIV/AIDS, entitled “Global Crisis – Global Action”, 7
Taking note with appreciation of the reports of the Secretary-General on
progress made towards achieving the commitments set out in the outcome document
of the twenty-seventh special session of the General Assembly 8 and on the status of
the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the issues raised in Assembly
resolution 59/261, 9 as well as the reports of the Chairman of the Committee on the
Rights of the Child, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for
