55/67. Traffic in women and girls
The General Assembly,
Reaffirming the principles set forth in the Universal Declaration of Human
Rights, 1 the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against
Women, 2 the International Covenants on Human Rights, 3 the Convention against
Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, 4 the
Convention on the Rights of the Child 5 and the Declaration on the Elimination of
Violence against Women, 6
Welcoming the adoption by the General Assembly of the two Optional
Protocols to the Convention on the Rights of the Child, 7 in particular the Optional
Protocol on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography, and the
increasing number of Member States that have signed and ratified these Optional
Protocols,
Recalling all previous resolutions on the problem of the traffic in women and
girls adopted by the General Assembly, the Commission on the Status of Women,
the Commission on Human Rights and the Commission on Crime Prevention and
Criminal Justice, as well as the Convention for the Suppression of the Traffic in
Persons and of the Exploitation of the Prostitution of Others, 8 as well as the
conclusions on violence against women 9 adopted on 13 March 1998 by the
Commission on the Status of Women at its forty-second session and the
recommendations of the Working Group on Contemporary Forms of Slavery 10
