A/RES/49/16 Page 2 Taking into account the central role of the Nicaraguan people and Government the search for lasting solutions to consolidate the achievements of their transition, Recognizing the efforts of the international community and the Government of Nicaragua to provide relief to the persons affected by the aftermath of the war and natural disasters, Recognizing further the intensive efforts by the Government of Nicaragua to promote a sustained economic recovery and the considerable progress made in securing a broad social consensus by means of a process of national dialogue for the adoption of measures to lay the foundations for reconstruction and economic and social development, Taking into account the commitments adopted by the Central American Presidents at the Central American Environment Summit for Sustainable Development, through the Alliance for the Sustainable Development of Central America, 1/ and in this context the special attention required by the exceptional situation of Nicaragua, in order that these important commitments may begin to be implemented, Taking note of the report of the Secretary-General of 7 November 1994 on the measures adopted in compliance with resolution 48/8, 2/ 1. Commends the efforts made by the international community, including the organs and organizations of the United Nations system, to supplement the action undertaken by the Government of Nicaragua in the task of rehabilitation and national reconstruction, as well as in providing emergency assistance; 2. Expresses its gratitude to the Secretary-General for the submission of the report on the measures adopted in compliance with resolution 48/8; 3. Encourages the Government of Nicaragua to continue its efforts for reconstruction and national reconciliation, which remain essential to lasting progress; 4. Requests all Member States, the international funding agencies and regional, intraregional and non-governmental organizations to continue providing, in a broad and flexible form, support to Nicaragua at the required levels, giving particular attention to the exceptional circumstances of Nicaragua, both to overcome the aftermath of the war and natural disasters and to stimulate the process of reconstruction, social investment, stabilization and development; ____________ 1/ See A/49/580-S/1994/1217. 2/ A/49/487. /...
