54/134. International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women
The General Assembly,
Recalling the Declaration on the Elimination of Violence Against Women, adopted by the General
Assembly in its resolution 48/104 of 20 December 1993, and its resolution 52/86 of 12 December 1997,
entitled “Crime prevention and criminal justice measures to eliminate violence against women”,
Recalling also the Universal Declaration of Human Rights,1 the International Covenant on Civil and
Political Rights,2 the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights,2 the Convention on
the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women3 and the Convention against Torture and
Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment,4
Taking note of the Inter-American Convention on the Prevention, Punishment and Eradication of
Violence Against Women adopted by the General Assembly of the Organization of American States at its
