58/157. Rights of the child
The General Assembly,
Recalling its previous resolutions on the rights of the child, the most recent of
which is resolution 57/190 of 18 December 2002, as well as Commission on Human
Rights resolution 2003/86 of 25 April 2003, 1
Emphasizing that the Convention on the Rights of the Child 2 must constitute
the standard in the promotion and protection of the rights of the child, and bearing
in mind the importance of the Optional Protocols to the Convention on the Rights of
the Child on the involvement of children in armed conflict and on the sale of
children, child prostitution and child pornography, 3 as well as other relevant human
rights instruments,
Reaffirming that the general principles of, inter alia, the best interests of the
child, non-discrimination, participation and survival and development provide the
framework for all actions concerning children, including adolescents,
Reaffirming also the World Declaration on the Survival, Protection and
Development of Children and the Plan of Action for Implementing the World
Declaration on the Survival, Protection and Development of Children in the 1990s
adopted by the World Summit for Children, held in New York on 29 and
30 September 1990, 4 and the Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action adopted
by the World Conference on Human Rights, held in Vienna from 14 to 25 June
1993, 5
Reaffirming further the United Nations Millennium Declaration 6 and the
Declaration of Commitment on HIV/AIDS, 7
