The human rights to safe drinking water and sanitation
The Human Rights Council,
Guided by the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations,
Recalling the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant on
Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, the International Covenant on Civil and Political
Rights, the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial
Discrimination, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against
Women, the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Convention on the Rights of
Persons with Disabilities,
Recalling also General Assembly resolution 70/1 of 25 September 2015, entitled
“Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”, in which the
Assembly pledged to leave no one behind,
Reaffirming all previous Human Rights Council resolutions on the human rights to
safe drinking water and sanitation,
Recalling all previous General Assembly resolutions on the human rights to safe
drinking water and sanitation, including resolution 64/292 of 28 July 2010,

Welcomes the work of the Special Rapporteur on the human rights to safe
drinking water and sanitation;1
2.
Decides to extend the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on the human rights
to safe drinking water and sanitation for a period of three years;
3.
Requests the Special Rapporteur to continue to report, on an annual basis, to
the Human Rights Council and to submit an annual report to the General Assembly;
4.
Also requests the Special Rapporteur, in view of the tenth anniversary of
General Assembly resolution 64/292 and Human Rights Council resolution 15/9 of 30
September 2010 recognizing the human rights to safe drinking water and sanitation, to
initiate and participate in awareness-raising activities, including through social media and
with the use of accessible materials, and in collaboration with States, to compile good
